Dentures, also known as false teeth, are prosthetic dental appliances that are used to replace missing natural teeth and provide support to the cheeks and lips. They are supported by the surrounding tissue of the oral cavity and worn by those who have almost their natural teeth due to injury or illness. Dentures are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and can even enhance your smile. Dentures are ideal for patients who are not candidates for dental implants and for those who prefer to try other options for teeth replacement. Dentures can either be removable or implant supported, and complete or partial.

Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, or the patient is in the process of losing all of their natural teeth, and they are used to restore the appearance and function to jaws. Custom created to each patient for a tailored fit, the base is made of pink acrylic to mimic the look of gums, and the teeth are made of tooth coloured acrylic or porcelain that attaches to the base. They not only help with speaking and chewing, but they also can create a fuller face profile which can ultimately improve overall appearance. A complete denture can be either “conventional” or “immediate.”  A conventional denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed (this usually takes 4 to 6 weeks). During this waiting time, the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and are immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will be made for a proper fit.

Partial dentures are used by patients who still have some natural teeth still remaining and are missing only a few teeth in certain areas of the mouth. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, but also prevents other teeth from shifting. Partial dentures are removable and can be custom-made to cover an entire section of the mouth. The end result can look and feel very natural. Depending on your remaining number of teeth, partial dentures can be completely tooth supported, held in place by both teeth and tissue, or supported by implants and tissue.

Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear. They can improve the ability to chew properly and bite food, restore the appearance of your face, and protect remaining teeth from further damage. Because they can be removed, they can be cleaned and brushed properly, and ultimately restore self-confidence and eliminate social awkwardness you may face because of gaps of missing teeth.
